Puzzle 133.  AGE PROBLEM

Mrs. Brown has four children, namely, Alice, Bill, Cathy, and Dan.  Bill is currently twice the age of Dan.  Two years ago, Alice was twice the age of Cathy.  Four years ago, Bill was twice the age of Cathy.  Two years from now, Alice would be twice the age of Dan.  Three years ago, Cathy was twice the age of Dan.  Mrs. Brown's current age is the sum of her children's current age.  

What are the current ages of Mrs. Brown and her children Alice, Bill, Cathy, and Dan?

DESCARTES

Ranè Descartes (1596-1650) was a 17th century French philosopher and  mathematician.  He received his education in mathematics, classics, and law at La Flèche and Poitiers.  After a brief service in the military, he settled in Holland where he made significant contributions to the field of Algebra, Analytic Geometry, and Calculus.  The commonly used Cartesian Coordinate System was named after him.  His work, La géométrie, includes his contributions to algebra and geometry.
